April tips

Peter's Gardening Notes

The Garden in April

The heavier mower goes on the grass when dry enough, then the thatch can be raked out. Borders can be forked over to let in some air and help drainage. Further planting of potatoes can be done and get the bean sticks out. Successive sowings of salads can be undertaken. Hardy annuals can be sown. Take dead heads from early daffodils and feed the daffs to build up the builds for future seasons.

The Greenhouse in April

Sow runner beans into pots and other summer fruiting plants for indoor cultivation. Make a start on baskets for your outside display, but keep them indoors until all danger of frost is gone - they can harden off outside in fine weather.
